Start with the right nursing program list
Before asking how to get into nursing school, decide which kind of program fits your goals. ADN programs, traditional BSN programs, and accelerated BSN programs can have different timelines, costs, prerequisites, clinical structures, and admissions rubrics.
A smart school list usually includes reach, target, and likely programs. Do not judge fit by prestige alone. Compare nursing school GPA expectations, TEAS score requirements, deadlines, location, tuition, accreditation, and prerequisite policies.
Build the core parts of a strong application
- GPA: Protect your overall GPA and science GPA, especially in lab science prerequisites.
- Prerequisites: Finish required courses early when possible and track in-progress rules.
- Entrance exams: Prepare for TEAS, HESI A2, or CASPer if your programs require them.
- Experience: Add patient-facing exposure through CNA, volunteer, EMT, medical assistant, or clinic roles.
- Essays: Explain why nursing, why now, and why that program in clear, specific language.
- Recommendations: Ask instructors or supervisors who can speak to readiness, professionalism, and service.
Common mistakes pre-nursing students can avoid
- Applying only to highly selective programs without target or likely options.
- Missing a prerequisite because course names differ across schools.
- Assuming the minimum GPA is the same as the competitive GPA.
- Waiting too long to schedule TEAS or HESI testing.
- Submitting generic essays that do not show patient-centered motivation.
